“Let’s Not Talk About It, Let’s Get It Fixed In 2006”
Minority Caucus Report July 6-9th Las Vegas, Nevada Riviera Hotel Submitted by Amber Holland
This Caucus was a little different than last year’s Caucus in Chicago. There weren’t any workshops; instead there was a lot of discussion regarding Resolution 1. There were a few guest speakers. Nominations and the voting were held for officers for the Minority Caucus Board/Reps as well.
We heard from Detroit, MI, Councilwoman Brenda Jones, who is also the Minority Caucus Secretary. It was great to hear that she had won her election back in Detroit in 2006. She read a letter from the Black Caucus dated 1977 where the Caucus had stated their concerns about minorities being represented, treated equally, and being an active part of CWA. It was very distressing to know that same letter could have been dated 2006 and it would still apply with very few edits.
There was a great deal of discussion regarding Resolution 1, with this being the great democratic Caucus it is, not everyone agreed. There was a consensus that everyone agreed that Resolution 1 were good goals to have, but how, when…..what is the plan.
There was some debate on whether the Minority Caucus should support the Committee on Equities recommendation on the different parts of Resolution 1.
Nominations were held for the officers for the Minority Caucus. Most positions were unopposed. Our very own Michael Lynch was re-elected as the District 7 Representative for the CWA Minority Caucus. Congrats!
There was more discussion on Resolution 1, a dance was held Saturday evening, and a worship service followed Sunday morning. This caucus was very interesting and I learned a lot through the discussion and it was great to hear everyone’s opinions.
